Valid HTML 4.01!
backup2disk1 is a command-line tar-based backup script inspired by one of the ones I found on the Internet2. The existing script was great, but we wanted some extra features. Our script adds support for the following:
  • Choice of uncompressed or gzipped archive
  • Support for multiple independent configurations
  • Ability to override configuration parameters on the command line
  • Support for three backup levels
  • Ability to automatically mount and unmount a file system during the backup process
  • Multiple levels of email notifications and post-backup verification
  • The ability to exclude selected files and directories
  • Ability to cross file systems
  • Ability to dereference links
  • Hierarchical archive directory
For more information, see the documentation or take a look at the source (main script, functions) and sample configuration file. Known issues are listed at the bottom of the documentation.

The documentation (HTML only), script (/bin/sh) and sample configuration file are included in the download. To install, extract the files to the location from which you want to execute the script and modify the configuration file as necessary for your environment.

1 The current version is 1.5 (posted 10 Oct 2003).

2 I have been searching the Internet for days looking for the original source of the script I used as a starting point. Although backup2disk is a complete rewrite from scratch, the author of the original deserves credit. If I'm ever able to find it, I'll post a reference here.
